The aim of the course is to introduce the theories useful in grasping contemporary extremism and radicalism and discuss the historical development of related political practices from the French Revolution until today. The course will define basic terms and explore their roots, and consequently focus on the establishment of modern ideologies with a special regard to the extreme left and right in the 20th century (theoretical foundations and practices of anarchist, orthodox Marxist, racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, Nazi, Fascist and Communist movements). In the final part, the course will shift its attention to specific forms of extremism and radicalism in today's politics, and a wide range of related phenomena and trends in contemporary societies. More specifically, the course will discuss extreme left and right political parties and their military or paramilitary wings or associated organizations, ultra-left and ultra-right subcultures, ultra-nationalism, religious extremism, as well as Islamic fundamentalism. |
