The course introduces students to the study of "deviance", "social pathology", "(ab)normality" and "(non)conformity" in social sciences, while stressing the crucial differences between folk/normative and scientific/analytic approaches to the object. The course introduces and summarizes approaches and various often diverging paradigms in the study of "deviant" behaviour, and traces the developments and re-conceptualizations of the object. Fundamental theories, concepts and key authors will be introduced besides the key research projects and their authors. On the background of a critical approach to the object, the course will also focus on problems connected with formal social control, with the role of policies and formal institutions in the process of production and repression of forms of social deviance.
Part of the course can take the form of the guided but individual work of the students. Guided study-hours will be dedicated to close readings of the required texts in full length. The texts will be subjected to collective discussions during class meetings. |
