Course objectives:
|
On the basis of the functional description of syntactic relations of English:
- to get students acquainted with the basic features of the sentence structure of an English sentence;
- to enable them to understand the interrelations of the morphological and syntactic features of
individual word classes of English;
- to make students view the language as complex unit consisting of interrelated phenomena, influencing
one another and forming a hierarchized system

- written test (at least 70 % of the total)
- seminar paper (syntactic analysis of an authentic English text of at least 250 words)

Content
|
1. The position of syntax in the grammatical system of English; the basic syntactic terminology
(sentence, clause, phrase, constituent of a clause, word);
2. Individual sentence types by the word order and by the communicative function
3. The structure of a simple sentence: obligatory clause elements (clause patterns), optional
clause elements;
4. Characteristics of individual clause elements, means of realization, semantic roles:
subject, verb, obligatory subject and object complements, adverbial, modifier, optional subject and object complements;
5. Negation in English: means of negation; clausal, local negation; multiple negation; negative
concord;
6. Sentence consisiting of two or more clauses: paratactic and hypotactic relations; coordinators,
subordinators;
7. Compound sentence: coordinators, semantic relations between the main clauses,
8. Complex sentence: main clause, matrix clause, subordinate clause; types of
dependent clauses;
9. Dependent adverbial clauses: semantic categories, subordinating conjunctions;
10. Dependent adjectival clauses: restrictive, non-restrictive;
11. Dependent nominal clauses: content, relative

- znát základní pravidla výstavby anglické věty jednoduché a souvětí |
- chápat vzájemné vazby a souvislosti morfologické, syntaktické a pragmatické roviny |
- znát obligatorní i fakultativní větné členy, jejich sémantiku a prostředky jejich realizace |
- znát jednotlivé typy vedlejších vět určitých i neurčitých a jejich možné syntaktické role v souvětí |
