Course objectives:
|
The course focuses on Europe between the First and the Second World Wars. The lectures address the dilemmas of the victors of the First World War and the fragile structure of the peace terms after 1918, including mid- and long-term consequences for peace in Europe and the world. The course focuses on questions connected with the antithesis of democracy and totalitarianism and the impact of economic, social and ideological factors on the crisis of democracy in many countries in the 1930s. The second part of the course focuses on the causes of the Second World War in a wider context and takes national policy aspects in selected states into account (crises, civic conflicts) and the constellation of Europe on the eve of the general conflict in 1939-1945.
