Course objectives:
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to various theoretical and methodological approaches to the research of the phenomenon of political terrorism. The course will focus on the relation between the concept of just war and terror, or, in other words, on the question of legitimacy of terrorism. Furthermore, the course will deal with the dynamics and historical development of terror-related political practices from the French Revolution until today, and focus specifically on the relation between mass media and terrorism in modernity and the relation between social media and terrorism in the era of globalization. The course will also discuss state and non-state actor participation in terrorist activities, and discuss possible classifications of contemporary terrorism (right wing, xenophobic, anti-Semitic, left wing and anarchist, religiously motivated terrorism, nationalist, separatist and single-issue terrorism etc.). The course will also reflect on the role of the media in the construction of the terrorist threat, deal with motivation of suicide bombers and cyberterrorism.
|
