Course objectives:
|
The course introduces the languages of the ancient Near East, their rediscovery and decryption which was essential for research in the field of ancient Near Eastern cultures. The next section of lectures describes pantheon and religious ideas of particular cultural circles, the most important mythological, epic and cultic texts, methods of divination, magical practices, conception of the underworld and the cult of ancestors. Attention will be also paid to the temples, their staff, and to the cultic year together with its most important festivals.

Learning outcomes
|
Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Student is able to identify and characterize particular languages of the ancient Near East. He identifies the most important Sumerian, Akkadian, Hittite and Canaanite deities, and he paraphrases and interprets the content of the most important mythological, epic and cultic texts. He also compares the particular phenomena of religious life in different cultures of the ancient Near East and outlines the course of the most important religious ceremonies. |
