Course objectives:
|
The course informs the students about the causes, course and consequences of the First World War. The lectures will not examine only the political and military-strategic events, but also the economic, cultural and social development of Europe, of the world and last but not least of Austria-Hungary. The course will focus also on the problem of the so-called "Czech question" and on the possibilities of its solution.

1. On the way to the First World War I. Europe in the years 1900 - 1914
2. Ont he way to the First World War II. Non european areas in the years 1900 - 1914
3. Sarajevo attempt
4. June - july 1914. Events which headed to the outbreak of the First World War. Year 1914
5. Year 1915 - entrace of Italy to the war on a side of the Entente; develompent on european (east front, balcan front) and non european fields (Gallilopoli)
6. Year 1916 - big offensives on the western front; death of Franz Joseph I. and accession of charles I.
7. Year 1917 - unsuccessful negotiation about the separate peace; beginning unlimited submarine war from the German side; successes of the Entente on non european fields; entrance of USA to the war; rise of Czechoslovak legions in Russia (Battle of Zborov) and in France; revolution in Russia
8. Year 1918 - Fourteen Points of president Wilson; Treaty of Brest-Litovsk; failure of German offensive on the western front and Austria-Hungary offensive on Piave; breaking the German defence between alberto and Montdidier; the way to the peace - abdication of the emperor Charles I.; Compigne truce

Learning outcomes
|
Knowledge - knowledge resulting from the course: |
Students will create a timeline of major historical events of the First World War and analyze the situation and developments in various fronts. They will bring in context the Czechoslovak Legion and efforts for independence of the Czechs and Slovaks. They will recognize and formulate the importance of the U.S. entry into war on the side of Entente and evaluate the impact of the employment of modern weapons on course of the war.
