Course objectives:
|
This course includes the reading, translation, linguistic and content analysis of adapted or original ancient and medieval texts concerning Greek and Roman realia and ancient culture - the basis of European society and culture. The course is tailored to the expertise of its participants: linguistics, literature, religion science, mythology, history of culture, law, science, architecture etc. An emphasis will be placed on work on the semantics of words relative to their presence in vocabularies of modern languages. The topics will include: the 1st and 2nd declinations of nouns and adjectives; the verb esse; the conjugation of regular verbs; the indicative and infinitive of the present tense in active and passive voice in verbs from the 1st to the 4th conjugations; imperatives; adverbs formed from adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declinations; deponent verbs; the declination of personal and possessive pronouns.

o Week 3. Introduction to Conjugation, Verbal stems, Indicative of the present tense in active and passive voice in verbs from the first conjugation, irregular verb DARE
o Week 4. Indicative imperfect in active and passive voice in verbs from the first conjugation, Translation of Latin Passive
o Week 5. Indicative of future in active and passive voice in verbs from the first conjugation, Imperative I. and II. of the first conjugation, Present Participle in the active voice of the verbs from the first conjugation
o Week 6. Introduction to the Noun inflection, Substantives of the first declination
o Week 7. Greek declination, Passive personal relation
o Week 8. Possessive Adjectives, Translation of a Latin phrase
o Week 9. Substantives of the second declination
o Week 10. Negative, Adjectives of the first and the second declination
o Week 11. Substantivized adjectives, Latin adjective as an attribute
o Week 12. Second conjugation, Imperative II. of the second conjugation, Revision
